Description of the problem identified and causes:
The urban low income communities are exposed to high risk in terms of infections due to dense population; the challenges are manifold in the urban settings. More than 60,000 people are living in the urban slum and in refugee camp are very needy and distressed people, most affected by the pandemic and the lockdowns are individuals who are not able to work and who are not afforded social protection. There are growing fears of the substantial human impact with the arrival of COVID-19, within the overcrowded population of urban slum dwellers of Chattogram Coastal region. Vulnerable populations have no facility for hand washing or sanitizer. Social distancing is simply unrealistic among slum dwellers living side by side in the overcrowded area which is densely populated. Awareness raising and promoting healthy practices through participatory interventions in the area is needed.
Description of the intervention:
BISAP proposes the following interventions:- i) Provide emergency food-aid among vulnerable households. ii) Establish hand-washing facilities among community people iii) Distribution of hand sanitizer, masks and other among the community iv)Arrange community education, making disseminating messages about the current situation that are critical for COVID-19, prevention and preparedness and counting harmful misinformation v) Produce IEC/BCC materials for mass communications, Inter-personal & group communication, announcement, advertisements, orientation training etc. vi) Nutrition support for vulnerable pregnant women and mothers, vii) Nutrition milk support to infants , viii) Implementation and management Auditing and Reporting.
Sustainability
The proposed project will continue after the ending AMI project support. The awareness campaign will reduce the impact of the Corona virus on among slum dwellers that will act as capital investment for the community awareness raising and promoting healthy practices through participatory approach and will activate at community level to identify resources to contribute to safe living to identify the signs and symptoms, practices prevention methods and build the capacity to minimize risks associated with COVID-19. As a such the community people will be able to mobilize local resources for its sustainability.
